Wordle clues – hints, tips and answer for game #604, Monday, February 13

Welcome to another week of Wordle clues. Today's puzzle is a pretty straightforward one that the NYT's WordleBot tool says people are solving in 3.7 guesses. That's slightly higher than yesterday's, but not by much.

You still might find some clues to be helpful, though, so arm yourself with one of the best Wordle starting words, fire up your browser and read on.

I'm a Wordle addict who's been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Wordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Wordle clues and hints to game #604 and bookmark this page so you can easily return tomorrow.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Wordle today and yesterday are below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers.

Wordle clues (game #604) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has three vowels*.

Getting three vowels in a Wordle answer is unusual: only 226 of the game's 2,309 solutions have a trio, compared to 1,336 that have two and 732 that have one.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle clues (game #604) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is U.

U is not a particularly common starting letter in Wordle, with only 33 answers beginning with it. It ranks 20th in this regard, and is the least common vowel to start an answer.

That said, we did have one just over a week ago, when UNLIT was the solution to game #595.

Wordle clues (game #604) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

Wordle clues (game #604) – hint #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle today (game #604) – the answer

The answer to today's Wordle, game #604, is… USAGE.

With a WordleBot score of 3.7, today's Wordle answer is supposedly on the easier side of things. However, I wouldn't call it easy as such.

The letters are mostly quite common, but not necessarily common in the places where they are found here.

Well, A and E are – they're the most likely letters to be used in the middle and end of a Wordle answer respectively. But U doesn't start too many answers (it ranks 20th in this regard) and S is only 17th when used in the second position. In fact, that's arguably the biggest problem here – S is incredibly common at the start of a word (365 games) and pretty common in position #4 (171 games), but there are only 16 Wordle solutions where S is second.

All that said, the lack of viable options will have kept many scores down to 3, 4 or 5 today – I don't see too many people losing their streaks. SLATE left six possible answers, according to WordleBot, while my choice of STARE left seven. Most of the other popular ones were higher than that without being in the hundreds, for instance CRANE left 48, SLANT 20 and TRACE 38.

With a green A and E, and a yellow S, I could see there weren't many options for my second guess. WordleBot says there were seven, and I came up with five: CHASE, PHASE, LEASE, CEASE and USAGE. I didn't spot ABASE or BLASE – although I doubt the latter is a genuine Wordle answer anyway, given that the lack of accent would definitely confuse people.

Four of my five words ended –ASE, so that seemed the right approach. Two had -EASE, and two -HASE. Guessing one of those would presumably get me a 2/6 or 3/6, with a slight chance of a 4/6, so that seemed the right approach.

I chose LEASE, and that did the trick – the S stayed yellow, pretty much confirming the answer as USAGE. As an aside, WordleBot didn't like it much, describing it as lucky. Well, it was – but equally, it wasn't that lucky, because given that I'd not spotted BLASE (and don't think it is an answer), I'd still have had a 50/50 even if the S had turned green. I couldn't realistically have got worse than a 4/6 today, so chancing my luck made sense!

Anyway, USAGE duly solved the puzzle on the next go and gave me another 3/6. How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

Wordle yesterday (game #603) – clues

In a different time zone where it's still Sunday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #603 too.

  • Wordle yesterday had two vowels.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was G.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle is enormous.

The answer to yesterday's Wordle, game #603, was… GIANT.

Ah, that's more like it. The past couple of games have been a little on the tough side, but GIANT shouldn't cause too many problems. In fact, WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.6, which theoretically makes it the easiest since DANCE a week ago.

It's easy to see why: G is surprisingly common at the start of a word, with 115 games beginning with that letter, while I ranks fifth when used as the second letter.

The other three letters are even more common – A is the most likely letter to be in the middle of an answer, N is the second most likely in position #4 and T is the third most common at the end.

Your task will have been made easier still if you used specific options among the best Wordle starting words. SLANT was the pick of WordleBot's favorites: it left just five remaining answers. But SAINT was better still – if you began with that you had a guaranteed 2/6, as it only left one solution!

I played STARE, and though it wasn't quite so successful, it still did the job nicely here, giving me a green A and yellow T.

I had just 14 answers left, WordleBot told me after the game, but really it was fewer than that. WordleBot's choices included CHAAT and QUANT, which I very much doubt are actual answers, plus the almost-as-unlikely TOADY (which I also had in my own list). It also included TWANG, which I remembered being an answer back in August (game #425).

Others that I shortlisted were THANK, TWAIN, AWAIT, ADAPT, LOATH, PLAIT, GIANT, CHANT and PLANT. Unfortunately my memory wasn't flawless, because I didn't recall that the latter two had also been past answers.

As it happens I played PLANT next, because that –ANT ending seemed like a good one. And even if it was wrong, the P might point the point the way to ADAPT or PLAIT, or the N to THANK or TWAIN.

The final three letters duly turned green, leaving me with (I thought) a straight 50/50 between GIANT and CHANT. I could have gone either way here, but by now I had a vague sense that maybe CHANT had been a previous answer so played GIANT and was rewarded with a 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
