It's a weird time on the new Netflix movies front. Right now, new movies aren't dropping weekly on the platform – instead, we're seeing two films arrive within days of each other, which recently happened with The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep and La Dolce Villa, or going two to three weeks without a new Netflix Original landing on the service.
Things should pick up from March onwards but, in the meantime, you can always count on our best Netflix movies article if you're looking for some utterly brilliant films to watch on the world's best streaming service. Before you check out that guide, though, read on to see if any of Netflix's most recent movie releases appeal to you.
New Netflix movies: February
La Dolce Villa
Release date: February 13
Runtime: 199 minutes
Age rating: PG-13 (US) / PG (UK)
Cast: Scott Foley, Maia Reficco, Violante Placido, Giuseppe Futia, and Simone Luglio
Director: Mark Waters
RT score: TBC (critics); 58% (audience)
Arriving in time for Valentine's Day, La Dolce Villa stars Foley as Eric, a successful entrepreneur who flies to Italy to stop his daughter from wasting her money on restoring a crumbling villa. Once there, though, Eric finds the southern Europe nation to be to his liking and it isn't long before he's bowled over by a particular Italian woman who catches his eye.
Another rom-com that's failed to make a mark with Netflix's global fanbase (from an RT score perspective, anyway), La Dolce Villa isn't worth your time. Thankfully, my colleague Grace Morris has found three better rom-coms with over 80% scores on Rotten Tomatoes that you won't want to miss instead.
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep
Release date: February 11
Runtime: 91 minutes
Age rating: 16-plus (US) / 15 (UK)
Cast: Doug Cockle, Joey Batey, Anya Chalotra, Christina Wren, Ray Chase, Emily Carey, and Mallory Jensen
Director: Kang Hei Chul
RT score: 59% (critics); 39% (audience)
Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher book series has found itself on shaky ground in recent years, especially with its live-action Witcher-Verse. I had hoped, then, that The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep would *ahem* turn the tide back in its favor, especially after its adult animated predecessor – Nightmare of the Wolf – was well received.
Despite Cockle's reprising the role of voicing Geralt (he plays the character in CD Projekt Red's The Witcher videogame series) and an interesting premise, though, Sirens of the Deep failed to make a splash with me and other Netflix users. It's too short, lacks inventiveness from an animation standpoint, and suffers from other similar issues as its main show counterpart. The Witcher season 4 is going to be the penultimate entry of the primary series in Netflix's Witcher-Verse but, based on its floundering fortunes, maybe the streamer should cut its losses entirely with its take on Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy novels.
Kinda Pregnant
Release date: February 5
Runtime: 110 minutes
Age rating: 16-plus (US) / 15 (UK)
Cast: Amy Schumer, Jillian Bell, Will Forte, Damon Wayans Jr., Brianne Howey, Alex Moffat, Joel David Moore, Lizze Broadway, Urzila Carlson, and Francis Benhamou
Director: Tyler Spindel
RT score: 28% (critics); 25% (audience)
Here's a new movie that Netflix shouldn't have given life to. Kinda Pregnant stars Amy Schumer as Lainy, a singleton who becomes jealous of her best friend's pregnancy. In a bid to start garnering attention from any and all people who'll give it to her, Lainy starts wearing a prosthetic bump – and it works. Well, until she meets the man of her dreams and her little white lie starts to spin out of control.
You know what you're going to get from a Netflix comedy film like this, but even those who enjoy this kind of sloppy genre fare can see it's an abomination of a movie. Steer well clear and let it waddle off into the ether where no-one will ever see it again.
