Wordle clues – hints, tips and answer for game #606, Wednesday, February 15

You might well need some Wordle clues today, because it's a tough one. WordleBot, the NYT's AI tool that analyzes each game, says it has an average score of 4.2 – which makes it one of the hardest ones in the past few weeks.

You'll definitely want to begin with one of the best Wordle starting words, because a couple of them narrow things down right away. And that's important today.

I'm a Wordle addict who's been playing since December 2021, so I can definitely help you solve Wordle today and improve your game for tomorrow. Read on for my Wordle clues and hints to game #606 and bookmark this page so you can easily return tomorrow.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Wordle today and yesterday are below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers.

Wordle clues (game #606) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has one vowel, but repeated*.

Getting two vowels in a Wordle answer is a lot more likely than getting one; there are 1,336 Wordle solutions containing two vowels, but only 732 that have one. But getting a repeated vowel is less likely.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle clues (game #606) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle's 2,309 answers. In fact, it's almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Wordle clues (game #606) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are two repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, very few games have two sets of repeated letters: only 38 games in total.

Wordle clues (game #606) – hint #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is A.

A is a relatively common ending letter. It ranks 10th in this regard and today's game is one of 63 in which you'll find an A there.

Wordle today (game #606) – the answer

The answer to today's Wordle, game #606, is… SALSA.

Phew, this was a difficult one. I escaped with a 4/6, but I was helped greatly by my start word and others won't be so lucky. WordleBot says it has an average score of 4.2, but given that several of the best starting words narrowed it down a lot, I suspect there will be lots of 5/6s and 6/6s today (and a few lost streaks).

The problem is those two sets of repeated letters. This is a phenomenon that only occurs 38 times in Wordle's 2,309 answers; you're more likely to have a Z in a solution than you are to get two sets of repeats. It's happened before, of course, with MOTTO (game #403), MADAM (#387) and CACAO (#364) the most recent examples.

That aside, it's not too bad – the S at the start is very, very common, as are the A in position #2 and the S in position #4. The L in the middle and the A at the end are less common, but hardly rare. And the word is a well known one.

I started with STARE and it gave me a green S and a yellow A. WordleBot said I had 24 answers to choose from now, while anyone playing SLANT had just 10 and SLATE left only nine. The likes of CRANE (188), TRACE (185) and CRATE (185) were less helpful.

I figured there was no point going for a lucky second guess and instead tried to narrow it down further by including an extra consonant rather than the S that I already knew was in the answer. BADLY fit the mold, as it would confirm/rule out the likes of SALAD, SALVO, SALSA, SAVVY, SASSY, SAPPY, SAGGY, SAMBA and SADLY, all of which were in my shortlist.

WordleBot liked it well enough, and rightly so: it gave me a green A and yellow L, and reduced my options to just three answers. These were SALSA, SALVO and SALON. At this stage I decided to guess – the worst I could do was a 5/6, assuming I'd not missed any possible solutions. In fact, my situation was better than that: playing SALVO guaranteed that I'd solve it in either 3/6 or 4/6, because the O would point the way to SALON if SALVO was wrong.

It was wrong, but without the O – so I knew the answer had to be SALSA and scored my 4/6. How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

Wordle yesterday (game #605) – clues

In a different time zone where it's still Tuesday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #605 too.

  • Wordle yesterday had two vowels.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was S.
  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was D.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle is an auditory sensation.

Wordle yesterday (game #605) – the answer

The answer to yesterday's Wordle, game #605, was… SOUND.

This was a frustrating game for me, because I could easily have solved it in 2/6 and possibly should have got it in 3/6. But that's how it goes sometimes.

SOUND is one of those words that you think must have been an answer before, but apparently not. It doesn't present any particular difficulties, with five common letters in reasonably common places within the word. The NYT's WordleBot tool says people are solving it in 3.6 guesses, and that sounds about right to me.

A look at Twitter backs that up to an extent. Some people did lose their streaks, probably because there are multiple words that end -OUND. For instance, you could also have POUND, MOUND, ROUND, FOUND, HOUND, WOUND or BOUND. That's not a problem if you already used the S in your start word, but if you didn't do that then you faced this scenario:

It's a particular problem in Wordle hard mode, which I don't currently play in (though I have dabbled).

Anyway, my start word, STARE, gave me just a single green S and left me with 81 possible answers. The likes of SLATE (69) and CRANE (67) were a little better, but SLANT (16) was the one to go for here.

I didn't know there were 81 answers left, because WordleBot only tells you that after the game. But I could see there were too many for me to score a 2/6. Or were there? My first thought for my second guess was to play two more vowels plus a couple of common consonants. SPOIL and SOUND both fit the bit. And I think I was more likely to play SOUND.

As it happens, though, I instead decided to forget about scoring a 2/6 and instead narrowed it down with PYLON. This had the advantage of getting an extra consonant in there, and it did the trick – I was left with just two possible answers.

These were SONIC and, again, SOUND. So for the second guess in a row I could have played it and… didn't. Yes, I went with SONIC instead. Maybe I should have looked at the list of the past Wordle answers, because doing so would have confirmed that SONIC was an answer in December 2021, and I'd have scored a 3/6.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it's no use to me now. I played SOUND on the next guess instead and scored a slightly frustrating 4/6.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
