SPOILER WARNING: Today's Wordle answer and hints are below, so don't read on if you don't want to see them.

Wordle hints (game #910) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #910) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is G.

G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It's often paired with an L to make GL—, but I'm not revealing whether that's the case today.

Wordle hints (game #910) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

Wordle hints (game #910) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That's one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Wordle hints (game #910) – clue #5 – last chance

Today's Wordle answer (game #910) is… GLOBE.

And so we start the weekend as we ended the week, and indeed as we started the last weekend, with a straightforward Wordle word that has an average of below 4.0. That's now 14 games in a row that have been 'easy', for those of you keeping count.

Is this really easy? Well, it's on the easier side of things, but I wouldn't go so far as to use that word exactly. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.9, so it's only just below the overall average for the game across all of this year's puzzles, and there'd be no shame if you required four or even five guesses to solve it.

It has two slightly less common letters in G and B, which are ranked 17th and 18th respectively in terms of how often they appear among Wordle's original 2,309 answers. G is more common when used at the start of a solution, though, ranking eighth in that position.

Not many of the best Wordle starting words made much of an impact today – mainly because most don't feature a G or B feature. Some do have an -LO-E, format, though, and those words cut the options impressively. CLONE, for instance, left only five answers.

STARE contains neither a G, a B, an L or an O – so my first guess was a lot less helpful. My single green E left me with 106 remaining answers, and with the odds stacked against me for the rest of the game. Once again, however, my second guess worked wonders.

I went with LINGO, because it includes the next two most common vowels, the next two most common consonants, and a G for good measure. Three of those letters duly turned yellow, and together with the E that I already knew about, I now had four out of five.

I also now had only two possible solutions: GLOVE and GLOBE. And for once, I was confidently able to recall that GLOVE had been a past Wordle answer, in this case back in March of this year (game #639). I therefore only had one solution open to me, so I played GLOBE next for my 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #909)

In a different time zone where it's still Friday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #909, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was T.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle's 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was C.

C is a fairly uncommon letter to end a Wordle answer – it's only the 16th most likely to be found there.

  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is a subject.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #909)

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #909) was… TOPIC.

I wrote yesterday that WOULD (see below) had ended an 11-game run of Wordle answers with an average score of below 4.0. But now I'm going to have to retract that statement. I play the game very early in the day (UK time) so I can write and publish this column, and sometimes by the time the US audience has woken, the score has changed. That was the case here, with WordleBot now reporting a score of 3.9 rather than 4.0.

What that means is obviously that the record-breaking run of 11 games is now a record-breaking run of 12 – or rather 13, because today's answer also dips below the 4.0 mark.

TOPIC has an average score of 3.7, so it's a little easier than WOULD. That's to be expected, because all five letters are common, four of them particularly so. P appears a bit less often – it's ranked 15th overall – but it's hardly an unusual letter.

The inclusion of T and C, both letters which appear in some of the best Wordle starting words, is another reason for it to be fairly easy. TRACE, WordleBot's third favorite starter word, cut the options to just four, while TRICE was at five and REACT at 10.

My opener, STARE, gave me only a yellow T and left me with 119 remaining answers. Or at least 119 remaining words that WordleBot thinks are answers; the fact that it included the likes of TWIXT, CUTUP and JUNTO suggests it casts its net rather wider than I do mine.

Anyway, none of that mattered to me today, because I didn't attempt to list all of the answers, being well aware that there were simply too many to make that worthwhile. Instead, I played POINT, which has worked well before in this scenario and which worked very, very well today.

POINT is a great second guess if you have a yellow T, because it moves it to the end, where it is most common, then adds in a couple more vowels and two common consonants. As I said above, P is not in the same league as T, R or L – but it is the fifth most common starting letter, so is worth including in that position.

It wasn't there today, of course, but when it turned yellow along with the I and T, and with the O turning green, it still gave me a heap of information. The next task was to work out what the possible structure could be.

I figured the T was probably at the start, and after playing around with the letters for a while spotted TOPIC. That was the only solution I could find, and indeed WordleBot told me later that it was the only answer now available to me. I played it next for my 3/6 and was only slightly disappointed by the fact that WordleBot managed the same score.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
