Wordle hints (game #736) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has vowels in three places*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #736) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is R.
R is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Despite ranking third overall in Wordle, it's merely the 11th most likely to begin an answer.
Wordle hints (game #736) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.
Wordle hints (game #736) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is O.
O is a middling ending letter. It ranks 12th in this regard, and finishes 58 Wordle answers in total.
Wordle hints (game #736) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #736)
Today's Wordle answer (game #736) is… RODEO.
It's been a mixed week in Wordle – we started with KAZOO, one of the hardest puzzles this year, but have had a couple of (relatively) easy ones too, in the likes of FROST and CRANE. RODEO rounds things off in the middle: WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 4.1 guesses.
It has a repeated letter, of course, which instantly makes it harder than most games without one. That said, the repeated letter in question is an O, which is the second most likely letter to be duplicated in an answer (after E). That aside, the biggest complication is probably the fact that one of the Os goes at the end of the word – that's actually less common in Wordle than the letter appearing twice.
Personally, I'm just pleased this wasn't an -ER answer, as I suspected it would be when I got yellow R and E on the first guess. That start has left me with 181 possible solutions, according to WordleBot – ouch!
Not that many of the best Wordle starting words faired any better. SLATE (329), CRANE (187) and SLANT (530) were all worse than my STARE, while TRACE (171) and CARTE (163) were only marginally better.
Either way, there were lots of words to wade through. With that in mind I played LINED next in order to establish the position of the E and rule in/out a few more common consonants. That worked pretty well, giving me the green E I'd expected and also confirming that there was a D in the answer. Remarkably, that had removed 170 possible options from my list (which was only theoretical; I had a list, but it didn't have anywhere near that many words on it).
I still thought this was going to be an -ER word, as my newly reduced possibles list contained RUDER, ODDER, UDDER, CODER, DEFER, ORDER, DOPER and DOZER. I decided to put the theory to the test by playing RUDER… and to my surprise ended up with a green R at the start, but gray R at the end.
Well, well, well. This wasn't an -ER answer after all. It took me a while to work out what it could be instead, but eventually I realized that RODEO fit and played that for a straightforward 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #735)
In a different time zone where it's still Saturday? Don't worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #735, too.
- Wordle yesterday had a vowel in one place.
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was G.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was D.
- Yesterday’s Wordle answer is impressive.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #735)
Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #735) was… GRAND.
We're firmly in standard Wordle territory here. WordleBot says this puzzle has an average score of 3.8 and there are no major complications to it. It's simply a common five-letter word made up of common letters; your only real challenge is to narrow them down and put them in order.
That's true of all Wordle words to an extent, of course, but GRAND is a pretty basic example. There are no repeated letters, for instance, and not even any uncommon ones such as the V in yesterday's COVET (see below).
What's more, some of the best Wordle starting words will have given you a head start. CRANE left just seven possible solutions – although I suspect slightly fewer people will be beginning with that word after it was the answer on Wednesday. SLANT left 10 options and LEANT 12, although my pick, STARE, was higher at 32.
Fortunately, I got very lucky with my second guess. I'd decided that this was probably going to be a word with the format -RA–, so I left both the R and A out of my second guess and played CLING instead. This worked wonderfully well, giving me a green N and a yellow G. What's more, this G could only now go in two positions, meaning I had either GRAN-, G-ANR, -GANR or RGAN- and given that the latter three of those options didn't make sense, I was left with GRAND as my only viable guess.
I went with that next and scored a straightforward 3/6 on a straightforward Wordle day.

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
