New Prime Video movies: every new film joining the streamer in August 2023

Welcome to TechRadar's new Prime Video movies article. In this guide, you'll find a list of all of the new movies set to join the streaming giant in August 2023.

You read that right. Every. Single. One. In the past, we've handpicked the best new films arriving on Prime Video as and when they've been added to the platform. Now, though, we're switching things up.

From now on, at the start of every month, we'll update this article with every single new movie that's coming to Amazon's primary streamer. First, you'll see a spotlight section, with six to eight of the most popular or highly anticipated movies – as selected by our entertainment experts – that are absolutely worth watching before August ends. In the section that follows, you'll find a full list of all of the new Prime Video movies (Amazon Originals or otherwise) this month.

If you're after something TV show-based instead, check out our best Prime Video shows list, or find out how much a Prime Video subscription costs if you're not signed up to the service yet. For now, though, here are all of the new films debuting on one of the world's best streaming services over the next 31 days.

New Prime Video movies: the best films to stream in August

Dirty Harry

Release date: August 1

Legendary actor-turned-director Clint Eastwood’s back catalog is so good, it’s often difficult to pick out his best movie. Few can argue against this 1971 neo-noir action thriller, though, being among his top five flicks.

The first entry in the titular character’s film franchise, Dirty Harry stars Eastwood as Inspector ‘Dirty’ Harry Callahan, who tries to track down a mysterious psychopathic killer known simply as ‘Scorpio’. The movie, which is one of many to be based on, or directly adapted, the real-life Zodiac Killer case, was criticized for its brutality upon initial release, but is now widely considered to be a an expertly layered, all-action flick that deserves its place on the US National Film Registry preservation list.

Frost/Nixon

Release date: August 1

This historical drama – a movie adaptation of the 2006 stage play of the same name and extraordinary 1997 interview – deserved to win a big prize or two on the 2009 awards circuit. Given the competition it was up against, Frost/Nixon failed to bag an Oscar or BAFTA.

That doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time, though. Towering performances from Michael Sheen and Frank Langella as the titular British journalist David Frost and former US President Richard Nixon make for captivating viewing in this weighty retelling that’s as much a verbal boxing match as it is balletic. Stick it on your new Prime Video movies watchlist.

The Saw movie series

Release date: August  1

Few horror movie series can claim to be as profitable as Lionsgate’s Saw franchise. The popular series has earned over $1 billion secured at the global box office against a $97 million budget – that’s the total cost of all nine Saw films to date, too. As we say, a money-spinning series, this most certainly is.

Naturally, some entries are better than others. The original flick is still the best of the bunch, while the less said about its Spiral spin-off, Saw V, and Saw 3D, the better. Still, if you want to rewatch the vast majority of them for the umpteenth time, or check them out for the first time ever, you can now on Prime Video. The first six Saw movies are all available to stream right now. And, with Saw X set to debut in theaters later this year, now’s as good a time as any to do that.

Red, White, and Royal Blue

Release date: August 11

Arguably the biggest Original movie to debut on our new Prime Video movies list (there’s not much competition, admittedly), Red, White, and Royal Blue (RW&RB) will look to steal our hearts in a manner reminiscent of Netflix’s hugely popular Heartstopper TV series.

Based on Casey McQuiston’s LGBT romance book of the same name, RW&RB tells the tale of the secret relationship between Alex Claremont-Diaz, son of the US President and Prince Henry of the British royal family. Uma Thurman, Stephen Fry, and Ellie Bamber are among the big names in the film’s supporting cast, while Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine portray the main characters.

It remains to be seen if RW&RB will make it onto our best Prime Video movies list later this month, but we’re sure it’ll resonate with viewers all the same.

Cocaine Bear

Release date: August 15

A ridiculously original premise for a ridiculously fantastic film that lit up theaters in early 2023. Inspired by true events, this comedy horror flick is an absolute must-see for all cinephiles, regardless of whether you genuinely think it’s great or a hot mess.

Cocaine Bear tells the incredible true story of an American black bear that ingested almost 75 lbs of the lost drug in the mid-1980s. In reality, the bear died after overdosing on cocaine – but, understandably, the movie dramatizes events in more horrific, hilarity-inducing ways as the titular creature goes on a murderous rampage across the state of Georgia. Keri Russell, Star Wars alumnus Alden Ehrenreich, Ray Liotta, Matthew Rhys, former Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju, and O’Shea Jackson Jr are among its starry cast.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Release date: August 25

After wowing critics in March, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves quickly made its way onto Paramount Plus after failing to set the world alight at the worldwide box office.

Despite struggling to earn recognition among general audiences, the comedy-infused fantasy film, which is based on the hugely popular tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons, is a terrific movie – and it’ll be streamable on Prime Video before August is over. So, if you failed to catch it in theaters and/or don’t own a Paramount Plus subscription, you’ll have no excuse to sleep on Honor Among Thieves for much longer.

Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Michelle Rodriguez (Fast & Furious) lead an ensemble cast as Edgin Darvis and Holga Kilgore, a bard and barbarian who embark on a quest to retrieve a lost relic. Joining the A-list roster are Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, Daisy Head, and Bradley Cooper.
