Today’s Wordle answer (game #915)
Today's Wordle answer (game #915) is… BUILT.
I'll be honest, I'm getting a little bored by Wordle right now. I know, that's heresy, right? But I'm craving a difficult one. Something to actually challenge me, to make me use my brain. BUILT has an average score of 3.9, according to WordleBot, making it the 20th puzzle in the past 22 that has been below the overall average for the game, and which therefore could be classed as 'easy'.
Obviously it's not a really easy one – 3.9 is only just below the standard 4.0 mark, and it took me four guesses to solve. But there was no real peril here, and nor has there been for a long time (with the possible exception of BACON, for me at least).
Admittedly, a lot of this is my own fault. I choose to start with one of the best Wordle starting words every day, which immediately makes the task a lot easier. And I choose to play in standard mode, rather than on the hard setting. I could change one or both of those factors and make the solving job a lot more difficult. Why don't I? Well, for one I'm very proud of my Wordle streak, which now stands at 717. And secondly, I just know that if I stop starting with STARE, fate will decree that it will appear as the Wordle answer the very next day and deny my the 1/6 that I think I have earned.
These are both silly reasons of course, so I'm making an early New Year's resolution: I'm going to start with a random word each day from January 1, 2024. Hard mode may come later.
Anyway, that leaves 11 more games in which I'll hope STARE is the answer, because it didn't happen today. Instead, it gave me only a yellow T and left 119 possible solutions. Far more successful results were had by players of SLATE (16), LEAST (13), SLANT (12) and STALE (9).
My second guess had a lot of work to do, then, and today POINT couldn't quite get the job done. By confirming the T at the end of the word and adding a green I, it reduced the options to four – but that was too many for me to claim a 3/6.
I could have tried, of course, but instead took the safe option and played a word that would guarantee me a 4/6. My reasoning was that the three words I'd found – BUILT, GUILT and QUILT (I missed TWIXT) – only differed by one letter each. So, if I guessed GUILT, for instance, I might still have a 50/50 for my fourth guess and could end up with a 5/6.
I didn't want that to happen, so played safe and went with BUGLE. If the B turned green, it would be BUILT, if the G it would be GUILT and if neither, then QUILT. In reality, TWIXT was an option too, but I'd have realized my mistake if the U and L in BUGLE didn't turn green and would presumably have spotted it then. I really was guaranteed a 4/6 here.
My plan worked: the B, U and L all turned green, meaning I now had all five letters for BUILT and played that next for my no-peril four.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle's 2,309 answers. In fact, it's almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was L.
L is a really common letter to find at the end of a Wordle. There are 155 games that finish with an L, and it ranks as the fifth most likely letter there.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #914)
Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #914) was… SMALL.
If I asked you to name the letter most likely to be at the end of a Wordle answer, you'd say E, right? Everyone knows that. But what about the letter most likely to be repeated at the end of a solution? Ah, got you there (but you probably know what's coming).
Yes, L is the repeatee (is that a word?) which appears more often than any other at the end of an answer, with 25 instances out of Wordle's original 2,309 answers. That's followed by double-S (21 answers) and double-F (13). And there endeth your lesson in repeated letter stats.
I don't tell you all of this merely to bore you, but also to explain two things. One – some letters are more likely to be repeated than others, and in specific places too. And two, today's answer is probably a little easier simply because that LL pattern at the end isn't entirely unexpected.
WordleBot says people are solving SMALL in an average of 3.7, making it harder than yesterday's ultra-simple TABLE (3.2) but still rather easy compared to some. It's another one where those of you opening with SLATE (4% of players today) will have had an advantage, because it left only eight possible answers. There is a reason why it's the best Wordle starting word, after all. Similar words did similarly well – SLANT left nine and STALE five, for instance, but not many people play either of those.
STARE left me with 31 options, which is an adequate if not stellar result. As is always the case when I have a green S to play with, the big question for the second guess to answer is 'which letter goes in the second position'.
After an S, you're generally looking at T (already ruled out for me), P, L, H, M, N, C or W, or a vowel. Possibly K too, but that's less likely. With that in mind, I worked through the options and came up with most of those 31, missing only a couple (SWAMI and SWAIN, for instance). Then I played CHIMP – because it contains four of those S-following letters.
WordleBot preferred PLINK and told me that CHIMP was merely a “solid guess”, but the 'Bot doesn't always know best. Today, my guess left me with only one remaining answer, SMALL, and a guaranteed 3/6 – whereas WordleBot's would have left five. In your face, robot!

What is Wordle?
If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
