With a list price of $35, and sales prices that are routinely lower, the Insteon Water Leak Sensor is one of the cheapest flood detection solutions on the market.
But of course, you get what you pay for. Insteon’s sensor lacks an audible alarm, outlet power, temperature readings, and extension cable support. And because the sensor only works with Insteon hubs, your integration options are limited.
Setting up the sensor
Insteon’s sensor has a straightforward setup process: Once your hub is up and running, the companion smartphone app guides you along. A button on the sensor initiates the pairing process, which involves holding the button, then tapping it, then pressing a button on the app, then tapping the sensor button again. (One quirk: After setup, the app displays sensor status as “unknown” until it has detected water for the first time.)
